FOUNDATIONAL STAGE (PRE-NURSERY TO CLASS II)

Pre-Nursery Overview

Set within a warm, secure, and joyful environment, the Pre-Nursery stage marks a child’s first step beyond home, where comfort, trust, and belonging are central. Learning unfolds naturally through play, relationships, and exploration. Our nurturing classrooms encourage children to feel safe, valued, and expressive, while simple routines help build early independence. The Activity & Play Zone enhances development through movement, coordination, and sensory play, fostering confidence in a joyful setting. At The Newtown School, we believe early childhood is not preparation for learning—it is learning itself, laying the foundation for curiosity and confidence.

Teaching Methodology

Our approach is play-based and experiential, recognising children as active learners who grow through exploration and interaction. A blend of guided and free-play activities—including storytelling, music, sensory play, and hands-on experiences—supports holistic development. Montessori-inspired practices further nurture independence, focus, and coordination. Learning experiences promote social, emotional, language, cognitive, and physical growth, while the Activity and Play Zone enriches sensory learning through active engagement.

Evaluation

Assessment at the Pre-Nursery level is continuous, informal, and observation-based. Teachers carefully track each child’s development across social, emotional, language, cognitive, and physical domains through daily interactions and activities. This gentle and holistic approach ensures that every child’s unique pace of growth is respected, supported, and celebrated, building a strong and confident foundation for the years ahead. Apart from the term-wise detailed reports on the learning journey of each child, periodic feedback on milestones achieved and developmental levels reached is also shared with parents throughout the academic session. These observations form part of an ongoing and formative process that allows us to better understand each child’s progress, strengths, and areas where gentle support may be needed. We believe that when we share more, we can work together more effectively in supporting a child’s growth and development. These periodic feedback reports are therefore intended to provide parents with a more continuous, meaningful, and holistic picture of their child’s overall development beyond the formal assessment cycle.

Nursery – Class II Overview

Set amidst greenery with a vibrant play area, the Foundational Stage is a nurturing "home away from home" for our youngest learners. This stage fosters creativity, curiosity, and joyful learning, allowing children to blossom into confident individuals. Children engage in a balance of formal and informal activities such as singing, storytelling, games, art, and physical education. A well-stocked Junior Resource Centre further supports language and literacy development.

Teaching Methodology

Our environment encourages exploration through structured play, hands-on learning, and collaborative activities using swings, puzzles, block games, and digital tools. Experiential learning and role play deepen understanding while building communication and social-emotional skills. Classrooms feature interactive boards, iPads, and an iTheatre lab to support 21st-century learning. STEM concepts introduced through LEGO Simple Machines nurture creativity and critical thinking. Subjects and experiences are thoughtfully designed to promote well-rounded, sensory-rich development.

Evaluation

NUR, LKG AND UKG

Evaluation is continuous and informal, based on observations and activity-based assessments over three terms. This approach nurtures each child's unique growth journey.

CLASSES I AND II

Evaluation is a blend of informal and formal methods, including observations, practice work, revision worksheets, and activity-based tasks across three terms. In Classes I and II, this continues with added term-end assessments, ensuring steady progress throughout the year.
